Saffron

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world.  Be careful, you can pay anything between $4,000 and $40,000 a kilo!  The delicate stamens are gathered from the crocus flower by hand and dried carefully.  When added to paella they contribute their beautiful yellow colour and delicate, distinctive aroma to the dish.

Saffron is also an ancient medicinal supplement, associated with lowering blood pressure and, more recently, the prevention of macro degeneration.

Add saffron to hot water for a beautiful, warmly glowing tea.  And, for a truly sunny, healthy snack, add saffron to your favourite scone recipe and serve them with the tea!
